This paper is concerned with why and how the expletive object is licensed. After rejecting Authier’s (1991) Case-based approach, I propose that it is licensed when a verb has the following selectional requirements: it c-selects a DP and simultaneously s-selects a proposition. These two requirements are near-contradictory, for DP usually does not denote a proposition. I claim that this problem is resolved when the c-selectional requirement is met by an expletive object and the s-selectional requirement is met by a clause. It is shown that this proposal sheds light on various types of expletive object constructions and the relation between c-selection and s-selection.
