In the Minimalist Program, the basic assumption of expletive there constructions are still following Chomsky (1981)’s assertion that expletive there has neither a thematic role nor morphological feature for Agreement. Thus, it has no functions as a syntactic element, simply merged in Spec-T only to delete EPP feature of T as a syntactic dummy. This paper’s analysis is shown to account for the semantic effects of expletive there and semantic restrictions on expletive there constructions. We argue that semantic restrictions are formulated from the correlation between there-subject and associate NP. Accepting the assumption of Hazout (2004), we propose that expletive there is the subject of the small clause because the post-verbal NP serves as the predicate of the small clause. Finally, we propose an analysis for expletive-associate constructions by Chomsky’s(2007) theory of feature agreement. We propose expletive there is a subject that must be merged in Spec-υP in order to remain associate NP subject in ʋP internal-position, and raise to the external subject position in order to satisfy the edge feature of C-T. As a result of two subjects(moved there subject and ʋP-internal NP subject), expletive there constructions have definiteness effect.
