This study is about the story of Gonae-ri people of Jeju Island, who immigrated to Japan and has a history of hundred years there. Despite migration to Japan, which started in 1917, many Korean ethnic people returned to their homeland due to the liberation, which occurred in 1945. However, the rebellion on April 3, in 1948, made people to re-migrate to Japan.
From 1995 up to now, the presenter has been studying the life of the village by using cultural anthropological method, which seems to her that the village life has been completely transformed into the middle of Tokyo.
Among the results of the study, especially, about the life and death of the first generation and also regarding the identities of both second and third generations will be presented. 20 years ago, based on the case of the family who accepted the testament of an old woman, where she asked not to make the cremation and bury her in the homeland and was really escorted to the funeral ceremony thereafter, the researcher investigates the process of migrants’ settlement, focusing on their family history and also identities of the second and third generations.
