Walk Two Moons is a bildungsroman that describes a 13-year-old protagonist’s mental growth. The protagonist, Sal, takes a long road trip with her grandparents to follow her mom’s traces. The journey is to discover her mom’s final trace, to look for her own subject, and to seek the symbolic over the imaginary. This paper investigates Sal’s journey that she tries to seek her subject, and analyzes it based on the Lacanian theory. The novel has a dual structure that is composed of two stories of Sal and her friend Phoebe, and each story shows a triangular relationship.
The relationship with people around Sal and Phoebe in the novel builds the three angular points of the desire triangle that Lacan presented and Shoshana Felman geometricized. Moving from the first triangle to the second one shows moving from ego to subject and from the imaginary to the symbolic, and also it means overcoming Oedipus complex in the process of growing up.
