This article investigated the effect of socia1 re1ationship upon the sufferer and its positive and negative aspects. The concept of " garden"(גו) in Song of Songs 2 reminds us of Genesis 2-3. The concept of "he1per" (עוד) in Genesis 2:18-25 is pivota1 to the events of God"s creation and the human disobedience in Genesis 2-3, and it function as a theo1ogical theme to connect the two events. The 10ss of Adam’s ro1e as a he1per (עוד) for Eve, who is exposed to the temptation of the serpent, 1eads to the 10ss of their community the Garden of Eden (Gen 4:12) as the Paradise and further changes the Garden into a gloomy garden that has deep scars (Gen 2-4). However, a winter garden in Song of Songs 2, which is a dwelling p1ace of a suffering Shullammite woman and a closed place where restricts her life , begins to be restored to an, open garden" by her lover" s calling her out.
The story of lovers in Song of Songs 2-4 also helps us to understand the event of Abraham in Genesis 12 , in particular , through the imperative verb halach (חלך ). In Song of Songs 2:10, where the lover of the Shullammite woman peeping through the windows calls her, he uses the imperatives "arise" (קומי ) and "let"s go" (לכי). In Genesis 12:1 also, God requests Abraham to leave his hometown, relatives, and father"s house and "go"(לך) to the land that He will show him. The two stories that have the same motive halach, however , gradually reach different theological conclusions. In Egypt where the desire of the powerful is at once order and commonsense (Gen 12:12) , Abraham succumbs to Pharaoh who wants to possess the beautiful woman Sarah without hesitation (vs. 15) , and Sarah also succumbs to Abraham"s different kind of violence to her in silence without opposition.
On the contrary, the behaviour of the Shullammite woman is differentiated from Abraham and Sarah"s choice. The restoration of the garden, which starts with halach (חלך) in Song of Songs 2, is realized by the great vision of the Shullammite woman in Song of Songs 3. As a wall (כת לגו ) and a window lattice (חלוך ) that lay across between the Shullammite woman and her lover already suggest, some situations of crisis await before the winter garden is restored to a " open garden." However, she resists the existing circumstances and destiny of the closed soci띠 structure. Her suffering and risky situation are overcome by her lover" s calling her out and her answering to his calling, and the garden is fmally restored.
