Motivating military cadets is one of the most important concerns for Military Academies. Because our society expects them to become the leaders of military eventually, imposing proper environment where cadets compete and accumulate various skills and abilities is important and deserves scrupulous investigation. First we conclude prior literatures on motivation can help to explain behaviors of general students, but is not sufficient to account for incentivizing cadets to put efforts. So for cadets who learn plenty of needed skills concurrently to thrive as elite officers, new analysis of how to give effectual incentives is necessary. Using tools of game and contract theories, we revisit two big themes for this issue.
First there is social dilemma : alignment of cadets’ pursuit of own happiness and social goal should be accommodated with higher-powered incentives on the ground of proper evaluations. Second, we need to differentiate cadets’ economic incentives to motivate them to acquire skills which society thinks important when they become leading military officers.
