Korean households` demand for food consumed away from home is on the steady increase. The ratio of eating-out expenditure of the household income, however, tends to decrease recently irrespective of income and age groups. This paper, therefore, aims to analyse the food-away-from-home expenses of salary and wage earners` households by both income and age group. The food-away-from-home expense is modelled as a function of household income eating-out prices and then estimated using econometric methods such as regression, rolling regression and variance decomposition of forecast error. The regression results show that not only the higher the income group is, the lower the income elasticity of eating-out expenses is, but the higher the age of the household head is, the lower its income elasticity is. The high income groups enjoy seasonal eating-out, while the low groups do not. The rolling regression shows that the income coefficients of lower income groups are on the fall, but those of higher income groups are on the rise. The increase margin, however, tends to slowdown recently, meaning that households reduce the eating-out expenditure. The income coefficients of younger age groups do not change significantly, but those of older age groups decrease. The variance decomposition shows that the income variable only plays a crucial role in determining eating-out expenses at the 1st and the 2nd income quintile, and the price as well as the income variable affects the expenditure at the 3rd and the 4th income quintile. The income coefficient is relatively very low and the price variable is insignificant for the 5th income quintile. We also find that the eating-out behaviors of all age groups are exogenous to income and price, and the exogeneity is very strong for the over-60 age group.
