Hyeon Jin－geon(1900∼1943) was born and also spent his adolescence in Daegu. He then moved to Seoul where he worked as a reporter and novelist. He was probably the first man from Daegu that earned his fame for his writing in the early days of modern literature. His father Hyeon Gyeong－woon was appointed to the Daegu office [Jusabu－panimgwan] in 1895, settling down in the city. He had no special ties with the city and there is no information about his personal history behind his settlement in the city. It is not widely known either that he became a community leader after settling down in Daegu and earned the reputation for his activities in the educational business of the city.
Hyeon Jin－geon was his fourth son, being born and spent adolescence in Daegu. He also received education in the city until he got married and moved to Japan and China for further study. It was right after he returned from China that he became a foster son in the family register of Hyeon Bo－woon, his father’s first cousin. Since then his life in Seoul continued as a newspaper reporter and writer. His memories of his life in Daegu became major motifs in his novels. His nostalgia for his family and hometown during the years when his inner world was built as a writer had impacts on his works.
This study set out to investigate how his family’s settlement and ups and downs in Daegu were projected onto his works since his family was closely related to the national movement and the independence movement that were developed in Daegu.
