The UN · International Cooperation and Research for Crime Prevention is an annual project aimed at promoting international research and engagement of KIC with national, regional, and international agencies around the globe. To effectively organize and manage the project in its fourteenth year, the International Cooperation Center formulated the 2018-2022 master plan, which is expected to allow for further expanding an international network, disseminating research, and facilitating global scholarly exchange.
This year, the Center expanded its international reach by undertaking following research and activities. Firstly, it conducted joint research projects with the International Centre for Comparative Criminology of the University of Montreal and the Cybercrime Observatory of the Australian National University. Secondly, it engaged in and contributed to academic discussions on the topics of cybercrime, trafficking in persons, and corrections during prominent international conferences, including the 4<SUP>th</SUP> Intergovernmental Expert Group to Conduct a Comprehensive Study of the Problem of Cybercrime, the 1<SUP>st</SUP> East Asia Forum, and the 74<SUP>th</SUP> Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology. Thirdly, it strengthened the partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the lead agency in the field of global crime prevention and criminal justice by participating in the 27<SUP>th</SUP> Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) and assuming the lead role in organizing PNI Workshop 4 entitled, “Current crime trends, recent developments and emerging solutions, in particular new technologies as means for and tools against crime” to the Fourteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to be held in 2020.
Lastly, the Center took steps to engage with the previously unengaged regions and countries, in particular Sweden and Russia, with a view to support formulating national criminal policies in the field of anti-corruption and cybersecurity. In particular, the Center coordinated the participation of the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå) represented by its Director-General Dr. Erik O. Wennerström in the fifth KIC International Forum held on December 6th in Seoul, Korea. The Center also hosted the first Russia-Korea Forum on Cybersecurity Law and Policy to facilitate discussions with experts from the Far Eastern Federal University located in Vladivostok, Russia.
