(Background and Purpose) A variety of crafts, ranging from household goods to building materials, can be found in Korea. Crafts have long reflected the local environmental and cultural characteristics of the regions in which they are made. In the country’s progress toward modernization, however, Korean crafts failed to undergo developmental succession. Thus, most Koreans view them as little more than cultural heritages or souvenirs for tourists. In recognition of the diminished status of the craft culture and industry, the Seoul Metropolitan Government aims to establish the Seoul Crafts Culture Museum as a platform for disseminating a craft culture and enhancing its value. The anticipated museum site was formerly that of the Pungmoon Girls’ High School in Anguk-dong. Consequently, a relevant feasibility study has been performed to introduce the museum with a focus on its functions, program composition, spatial composition, and basic direction for its operation. (Method) This study focuses on the necessary identity and role of the Seoul Crafts Culture Museum based on an analysis of research materials concerning the scope of locally made crafts and status of the country’s craft culture/industry; further, it provides direction for future development. Functions and facilities with which the museum should be equipped as well as programs it should provide as the country’s first crafts museum have been identified based on the content of the feasibility report and case analyses (domestic and international). The museum is expected to be a craft-centered cultural facility that links new cultural concepts with everyday culture of the local production system through programs designed to ensure collaboration and efficiency in exhibitions, research, education, and distribution functions. (Results) Through this study, the museum is envisioned as a global exhibition and promotional facility for locally made crafts that will secure their place in people’s lives. Finally, it is an organized body with functions that are closely interwoven for the promotion of creative research and creative activities. (Conclusions) Based on the findings of this study, it is expected that the museum will serve as a venue for diverse areas of research including the physical properties of materials used in the production of crafts. Further, the museum is viewed as a classroom for lifelong learning, an exhibition space offering inspiration to patrons, a marketplace open to all artists, and a composite cultural arena where craft workshop networks are interconnected and craft-related cultural activities are invigorated in linkage with the neighboring Bukchon Craft Village and local artisans.
