This paper looks at the variety of circumstances in which animal death occurred in Japanese local society, and the changes ritual handling of animal death has gone through due to the modernization of Japanese society. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate that animal death has been considered a common part of Japanese everyday life, and that ritual handling thereof (referred to in Japanese as dobutsukuyo) was practiced for many different species of animals. This poses a contrast for instance to Korea, where commemoration services for animals are hardly found in folk culture, although a recent increase in popularity may be seen. By looking at changes in the treatment of animal death in relation to socio-cultural changes, this study strengthens the notion that folk culture, often considered an unchangeable "tradition", is in fact a matter that constantly changes and is adapted to new circumstances continuously.
