This study analyzed pre-service biology teachers’ laboratory performances in measuring photosynthetic rate by light intensity to examine their ability and to determine any problems in conducting the experiment for the purpose of improving traditional experiment.The participants of this study were 36 pre-service biology teachers (8 male and 28 female) who are in their senior years and majoring in biology education. Their performance was examined in four domains; understanding of the photosynthetic rate by light intensity experimental process, the ability to conduct the experiment, the ability to transform data, and the ability to draw conclusions. To assess their performance, observation checklists were used and experimental reports were collected and analyzed. The result of this study showed that pre-service biology teachers understood well the experimental process related to variables identification and control. They were also able to conduct most procedures for themselves. However, in transforming data to graphs, difficulties were shown in putting the relative values of light intensity on the X axis. Only 14 members (38.9%) completed this successfully. Also, in drawing conclusions only 9 members (25.0%) drew conclusions correctly from the transformed data. The findings of this study suggest that it is needed to offer them opportunities to understand the laboratory process meaningfully and to learn basic graph construction skills. Also, the experiment itself should be altered to reduce potential difficulties.
