Purpose - This study estimates influence factors of the ecotourism market through a spending model for Vietnam, a potential market with high growth potential in the future. Design/methodology/approach - To analyze the impact on ecological tourism selection attributes and usage patterns of consumers in Hanoi, Vietnam, impact factors were estimated by applying the Tobit expenditure model most suitable for factor analysis and expenditure analysis as a research method for estimating expenditure functions. Findings - Expenditure referred to here is the unit amount of expenditure by the user that occurred at the destination. Research shows that variables positively affecting expenditure demand are transportation, accommodation, and facility fees by age. On the other hand, total expenditure and eating out were found to affect marital status. Total expenditure, eating out, accommodation, and facility use were found to affect the type of travel. Research implications or Originality - Results of the analysis can have a positive effect on providing differentiated marketing strategies in terms of actual consumers’ use of both the domestic and the foreign ecotourism markets. Based on results of this analysis, we expect to be able to provide efficient strategic data that will affect policy formulation of the domestic and the foreign ecotourism market spending needs in the future.
