The purpose of the current paper is to investigate the semantico-pragmatic functions of Korean ku in terms of synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Thus far, the role of ku has been studied with modern Korean data, but the research of historical literature has not been conducted. By looking at the development of ku from 15<SUP>th</SUP> century to modern times, we subcategorize the functions of ku as three-folds: i) demonstrative, ii) definite determiner and iii) modal determiner. Based on a variety of empirical data, we further show that there exist conceptual links among the subcategorized meanings of ku. The demonstrative ku is akin to the modal determiner ku in the sense that they both presuppose anti-uniqueness. The determiner ku and the modal determiner ku are similar in that they bring about the semantic effect of maximality and domain restriction. The implication of this paper is that the polysemous ku in modern Korean is a historical result. The concrete analysis on the grammaticalization is needed which we leave for future research.
