This paper analyzes Yokubô (1997) in order to trace Yukio Mishima’s influence on Mariko Koike’s novel. The aim is to clarify Mishima’s legacy, which is his having provided the subsequent generation of writers with a rich model of literary creativity. It has been 50 years since Mishima’s death, and since then, many scholars have analyzed his literary works from various angles, as well as his political ideas and actions. However, it is undeniable that there has been a tendency to minimize discussions of Mishima’s literary works in light of his death. Moreover, few studies have attempted to consider Mishima’s impact on the subsequent generation of writers who grew up reading him.
Therefore, this study focuses on the novel Yokubô, which was clearly influenced by Mishima. By identifying the works of Mishima that are referenced by Koike, this paper examines how Koike incorporates lessons from her predecessor into her own writing. This analysis allows us to better understand the characteristics, descriptive techniques, psychological descriptions, story structures, and content that are derived from several of Mishima’s writings and embedded in Yokubô. Furthermore, I analyze the effect of citing and paying homage to Mishima and suggest a new direction for studying the author.
