Arcadia starts with Thomasina’s provocative question: “what is carnal embrace?” However, the question is not confined as her simple curiosity, but extended to ‘sex’, a pivotal issue which is expressed throughout the play. In Arcadia, both present characters and past characters form complicated and multi-layered love relationships one another. The sexual appetite and the elements of romantic love among them generate “high voltage energy,” breathing dramatic life into the play. Furthermore, their physical relationships, which not only evoke love between male and female but also bring new life, work as the element of resistance against of death. It refers to the human destiny of entropic extinction.
We get enjoyment from ‘comedy of manners’ not because it has graceful, delicate, and vibrant freedom but because it has reasonal and faithful wit. Arcadia is similar to comedy of manners to a certain degree in that it reflects human nature and thinks highly of wit. But unlike comedy of manners, Arcadia does not emphasize morality but deter moral judgment.
In conclusion, Stoppard’s moral vision does not get out of Aristotle’s telelogy, the study of the ends or purposes that things serve. Although his works are decorated with advanced scientific theories and often show post-modern elements, they basically value tradition, rooted in modernism.
