A systemic review was performed to evaluate the epidemiological, pathophysiological, andclinical features of sarcopenia, the relationship of sarcopenia with critical illness and its impacton mortality, and diagnostic methods and treatment modalities. Generally, in the presenceof critical illness, sarcopenia is not included in the treatment approach strategies. An intensivistshould be aware that sarcopenia may be present in critically ill patients. Althoughthe main modalities against sarcopenia are early mobilization and nutritional support, theycan only prevent its development and may have positive effects on prognosis rather thantreating the existing sarcopenia.
