This study examines witchcraft imagination appropriated in the second Pendle witch trial, in 1633-34, and The Late Lancashire Witches, a dramatic work by Thomas Heywood and Richard Brome, based on the trial. In both the actual trial and the fictionalized play, the concept of witchcraft played an essential role. As witch hunts began to decline, witchcraft was transformed into a resource of the imagination, which opened the door to a forbidden territory filled with moral ambiguities. By the mid-seventeenth century, traditional witch belief was in conflict with emerging skepticism in England. The play’s co-authors appropriated the imagination of witchcraft as a representational strategy on the London public stage of the Globe, one of the most prominent centers for cultural activity in the period. In conclusion, the world of witches on the stage allowed some meta-theatrical distance for the audience to reflect upon their own conventional value system.
