This paper is an analysis of the space set in the short stories and plays of Na Hye-seok from the perspective of gender-geography. In “Gyeong-hee(경희)”, Na Hye-seok portrayed a woman who escapes from the home where the patriarchal order of the father dominates. However, the modern women who have escaped from the home lives in a rented room in Japan as shown in “To the Grand Dauter Who Revived(회생한 손녀에게)”, or in the poor and temporary places of sojourn like an inn as depicted in “Mother and Daughter(어머니와 딸)” and “hyeunsook(현숙)”. And in “The Woman in Paris(파리의 그 여자)”, too, the woman stays in momentary places in Paris, New York, and Wonsan Beach. But in those places of temporary sojourn, which are communities not bound by blood, they awake to national consciousness, write novels, get intimate with people, care for each other, and put open marriage into practice. In other words, they realize independence and freedom there. On the other hand, in “Sorrow of Woman(규원)” and “Resentment(원한)” the patriarchal home banishes the women who have lost their chastity. The old-fashioned women banished from home cannot find their own spaces, and live their lives as complete others in spaces like the floored room of someone else’s house or a small room as a resident servant. What the spaces in the works of Na Hye-seok have in common is that they are all temporary places of sojourn. But while the modern women who have escaped from home of their own free will pursue independence and freedom, the old-fashioned women who have been forced out of their home experience alienation and otherness. That the modern women could not take root in a place, but sought independence and freedom in temporary places of sojourn such as rented rooms, inns, or holiday places shows the instability of their lives. But the old-fashioned women, who are expelled from home and live in servants’ quarters of someone else’s house or in small rooms as resident servants, experience far worse alienation and instability than the modern women. According to Edward Relph’s concept of place, the rented room, inn, holiday place where the modern women stay are places that arouse an active, independent and authentic sense of place; yet the servants quarters and small rented room where the old-fashioned women stay are places in which they experience passive, enforced and inauthentic sense of place, that is, places in which they experience placelessness. Through the voluntary escape of the modern women, Na Hye-seok showed a feminism that resists patriarchalism; yet through the old-fashioned women who were forced to get out of the home, she showed a feminism that criticizes patriarchalism.
