Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the difference in physical fitness according to grip strength in elderly males and females (based on the Asian and European Society of Sarcopenia).
Method: The data were obtained from the 2017 National Physical Fitness Survey. The subjects, a total of 908 adults (454 men and 455 women) aged sixty-five years or older were measured Grip strength and blood pressure. All measurements were presented with a mean (M) and standard deviation (SD), and an Independent t-test was used to compare differences in grip strength and blood pressure (systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure) according to the Asian and European Society of Sarcopenia. The statistically significant level was p<.05.
Results: Results were as follows. 1) physical characteristics differed in age, height, and weight between men and women in both sarcopenia and normal groups in Asian and European working group of sarcopenia (p<.05). 2) blood pressure was found to be different in the Asian Sarcopenia group for women. In the European Sarcopenia for men, diastolic blood pressure was different in the Sarcopenia group and the normal group (p<.05), respectively.
Conclusion: Physical characteristics appear to have a greater influence on age gain, not on grip strength classification criteria. It is suggested that blood pressure may be influenced by gender and grip strength criteria in diastolic blood pressure. Therefore, a follow-up study is required to compare the effects on variables other than grip strength.
