Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is characterized by degeneration of optic nerve fiber and subsequent visual loss. Oxidative stress on nerve cell membrane can immediately disrupt cell membrane integrity and function, and ultimately can lead to neuronal death. Thus balance of oxidative stress and antioxidant system may play a role in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Markers of antioxidant system (antioxidant vitamins, malondialdehyde) were analyzed in 49 Korean glaucoma patients and compared to the data of healthy subjects (n=141). Serum antioxidant vitamins were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and degree of serum lipid peroxidation was spectrophotometrically detected by analyzing malondialdehyde (MDA). Lower levels of antioxidant vitamins such as lutein, β-carotene and lycopene were observed in serum of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients when compared to normal control (p<0.05). On the contrary, the MDA concentration was significantly higher in POAG (p<0.05). Significantly lower levels of lycopene (p<0.001) and γ-tocopherol (p<0.05) were observed in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) patients. Serum levels of lutein, zeaxanthin, α-carotene, β-carotene and MDA were not significantly different in NTG when compared to normal control. These results suggest that antioxidant system may influence POAG incidence while it is not influential in NTG.
