This study examines the semantic and syntactic changes and grammaticalization of the Korean substitute expression -nun taysin. First, syntactic changes of the expression were noted by observing the patterns of use of -nun taysin in Korean literature from medieval to modern times. Although taysin originally functioned as a verb, observations confirm that its function expanded to that of noun, adverb, connecting expression, and discourse marker. Second, the extension of the meaning of -nun taysin was captured in the corpus. Semantically, taysin began with a substitute meaning, but when it acquired the meaning “compensation/reward,” a combination of adjectives and tenses became possible, and the meaning “contrast” was then also obtained. Finally, English and Japanese substitute expressions corresponding to -nun taysin were analyzed, and it was observed that they are also undergoing semantic change and grammaticalization, resulting from subjectification in which personal evaluation is implied, reanalysis, and pragmatic inference.
