This article examines the interest in republicanism in Korea through the mixed constitution theory. Republicanism aims to resolve and integrate conflicts between classes into the public system. Republicanism has its core ideas of division of power rather than its monopoly, inclusion rather than exclusion, and balance rather than imbalance. To this end, republicanism is based on the theory of mixed constitution. The theory of mixed constitution stems from the failure of ancient Athenian excessive democracy. Mixed constitution theory argues for the control of excessive domination through the political participation of classes and the legal system. Aristotle, Polybios, Cicero, and Machiavelli"s theories of mixed constitution were the basis of republicanism. Mixed constitution theory recognizes the diversity of community members and emphasizes the rule of law to prevent arbitrary domination of any one class. In the end, the main concern of republicanism is to change “politics of exclusion” into “politics of unity.”
The Republic of Korea still faces various challenges in resolving conflicts, including conflict between rich and poor, regional conflict, gender conflict, and generational conflict. In the process of seeking to resolve these conflicts, interest in republicanism was achieved. The theory of mixed constitution as a core value of Western republicanism came from the experience that democracy, which is “rule by the people,” may not be “rule for the people.” However, it was also a Western experience that “rule for the people” could not be entrusted only to “nobles” rather than to “people.” Republicanism is a concern about the mixed constitution that exists between “politics by the people” and “politics for the people.”
