This paper is to pay attention to the illustrations of Korean language textbooks for three years of middle school in Korea and Japan, which are used in 2020, and to reveal the changes of the illustrations before and after the revision. Looking at the amount of illustrations by categories, Korea has increased in novels and decreased in explanations and statements, but Japan was opposite. In Korea, the proportion of paintings is high regardless of the genre. On the Contrary, in Japan, the percentage of pictures and diagrams in terms of the the material of an illustration the proportion of figure illustrations in “novel” and “explanation and statement” is 82.0% and 35.8%, respectively, while that in Japan is only 71.4% and 4.5%, respectively. In the explanation and argumentative texts, Korea dealt with the subject and human, but Japan is data-centered. Looking at the proportion of replaced text before and after the revision, 42.6% of novels are replaced in Korea but only 12.4% in Japan. Plus, 94.7% of explanatory and argumentative sentences are changed respectively in Korea, but 34.5% in Japan, which is significantly higher in Korea. Even with the identical text, Korea has replaced all illustrations at the revision, but its original intention is unclear. Still, the character's emotions were highly detail and the background description provides more specific information than the text. We can see that it still adheres to the content of the article and the textual function of the “corresponding” illustration. On the other hand, in the case of the same text in Japan, the illustrations stayed same as well. The character’s emotions were still not displayed and the discription of background was weak, maintaining the function of being “complemented” with the article. Regarding illustration, it was attempted to confirm the direction of revision of textbooks in both countries, but there wasn’t a desirable change occurred. Future follow-up is needed.
