Early Christian Discourse on Holiness: A Theory of Pauline Holiness Jeongsoo Park (Sungkyul University) This research aims to study Paul’s discourse on holiness through his terminology a`giwsu,nh and its synonyms, primarily found in Romans and other Pauline epistles related to our subject. Is it possible from the perspective of Paul to describe a ‘theology of holiness’? Paul’s eschatological schema about the resurrection of Jesus can be described through a typological approach. This covers his christology and ecclesiology as well as his soteriology. A correlation between the resurrected Son of God and the sons of God is elucidated through the “Spirit of Holiness”(Rom 1:4). Paul has received this formulation “according to the spirit of holiness”(kata. pneu/ma a`giwsu,nhj) from the early Christian tradition. Paul explains the Gospel “about His Son”(Rom 1:2): God resurrected Jesus “evx avnas,tasewj nekrw/n”(1:4) which could be translated not as “because he was raised from death,” but as “by the resurrection from the dead.” The resurrection of Jesus was the first-fruit “according to the Spirit of Holiness”(kata. pneu/ma a`giwsu,nhj); this is the same for the second fruit, the resurrection of the people of God by the time of ‘eschaton.’ The homogeneity between the first and the second fruit guarantees an eschatological continuity in the history of salvation. Paul explains: “And not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies”(Rom. 8:23). “The Spirit of Holiness” is the Holy Spirit given by God as His guarantee(avrrabw,n, 2Cor. 1:22; 5:5) as well as “Spirit of adoption”(pneu/ma ui`oqesi,aj( Rom. 8:15). The eschatological redemption of the people of God gets underway by the Holy Spirit from their experience on the first-fruit; the same Spirit, the Spirit of Holiness completed the second-fruit. Therefore, the way of Jesus kata. pneu/ma a`giwsu,nhj gives the ‘tu,poj’ for the life as the sons of God: suffering, death, and resurrection. A journey for the second-fruit of resurrection is that very thing “according to the spirit of holiness.” They are called to this redemptive way described as ‘being holy’: “For God has not called us for impurity, in holiness”(evn a`giasmw|, Thess. 4:7). ‘Holiness’ by the Holy Spirit is the will of God(Thess. 4:3) who journeys with His people for their resurrection.
