This study examines the trends of Chinese construction research in China using word clouds, a data visualization method among text mining methods, and topic modeling, which summarizes information by extracting topics from large-scale text data. Chinese construction research has been developing continuously since 1999, when construction grammar theory was first introduced to China, to the present. This paper examines the development of Chinese construction research by dividing it into five distinct periods. The first period, from 2000 to 2005, is characterized by the introduction of construction research. During this period, Chinese construction research began in earnest, with researchers mainly exploring the construction features of Chinese based on traditional Chinese grammar theory. This lasted until the boom period of construction research, from 2006 to 2010. The slow period of construction research, from 2011 to 2015, was a transitional period that saw a shift towards the study of how construction meaning is utilized. From 2016 to 2020, the heyday of construction research, the focus of construction research shifted to the “language” used in communication, which can be seen to last until 2021-2022, when construction research stabilized. Chinese construction research is characterized by the study of not only the grammatical features of Chinese, but also the unstructured construction phenomena used by speakers to express their thoughts and feelings. This characteristic has been the driving force behind the development of Chinese construction research into a uniquely Chinese field of study that raises the concept of grammatical construction and rhetorical construction.
