Through “Sanminzhuyi” for elementary and middle school students from 1927 to 1932, this paper seeks to analyze the discourse of nations and problematize contradictions by integrating the issues of “national sovereignty” and “class” as well as “ethnics.” The textbook symbolized Sun Yat-sen as a national hero and pivotal point, and mythologized the history of the Kuomintang as a national narrative. The textbook of the Three Democracies is the ethnicity・National Sovereignty・By advocating ‘equality’ between classes, he emphasized the emancipatory function of the ‘national’ discourse. However, beneath the banner of “equality” there was also an oppressive function that concealed the diversity and inequality that existed in the national discourse.
In other words, the theory of the Chinese nation, centered on the Han Chines, distinguished and excluded other ethnic minorities. The logic of national unity and assimilation based on the Confucian tradition as a national culture may be a nationalist movement for the Han Chinese, but it can operate as imperialism and colonialism for other peoples. Insofar as nationalism is closely related to imperialism"s civilizing mission, it cannot help but be in a symbiotic relationship with imperialism. In addition, the all-people politics based on the theory of class harmony concealed class differences, and the theory of direct civil rights and revolutionary civil rights based on the sovereignty of the people excluded the Communist Party and other counter-revolutionaries as non-citizens. On the basis of revolutionary civil rights, the national government suppressed the Communist Party and other counter-revolutionaries and created the New Life Movement, emphasizing national culture, which gradually led to the fascism of the Kuomintang.
