Purpose: This study aims to systematically analyze the competitive balance of Korea’s four major professional sports leagues (baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball) and identify issues and potential improvements for each league. Competitive balance is a crucial indicator of the long-term sustainability and success of sports leagues, affecting fan interest and overall league growth. This study seeks to provide insights into the current state of competitive balance and propose strategies to enhance fairness and engagement across the leagues.
Method: The research focused on analyzing the past 10 years of performance data from Korea’s four major professional sports leagues. The study employed various competitive balance indices, including standard deviation, index of dissimilarity, Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient, and distribution of lifetime win percentages, to assess the competitive balance across different leagues. These indices were used to measure the level of equality in team performance and the distribution of success within each league.
Results: The analysis revealed that each league exhibits unique characteristics in terms of competitive balance, influenced by structural differences, operational strategies, and existing policies. While some leagues, like baseball and soccer, maintain relatively stable competitive balance, others, such as women’s volleyball and women’s basketball, show signs of increasing competitive imbalance. This imbalance is driven by the dominance of certain teams, leading to reduced unpredictability and decreased fan interest. Additionally, the study found that existing policies such as salary caps and draft systems have varying degrees of effectiveness across different leagues.
Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a need for tailored competitive balance policies that reflect the unique characteristics of each league. Introducing innovative strategies such as dynamic point systems and underdog buff systems could enhance competitive balance, increase the uncertainty of outcomes, and sustain fan engagement. By adopting these strategies, Korean professional sports leagues can create a more equitable and exciting competitive environment, contributing to the long-term growth and success of the leagues. Additionally, continuous monitoring and data-driven adjustments to competitive balance policies are essential for maintaining fairness and ensuring the leagues’ sustainable development.
