This article provides an overview of the excavation status and characteristics of Japanese tablets in re- cent years. It also introduces the case of the 急急如律令 wooden tablet, which provides a glimpse of its relevance to Balhae, and approached the layered character of its ideas by considering the environment in which the tablet was excavated.
The 急急如律令 wooden tablet excavated from the Ano site shows the influence of the Fujiwarakyo wooden tablet and is thought to have been used in rituals based on the temporal environment of the Doraein faith and the spatial boundaries of the country’s borders. In the future, to understand the wood- en tablets more deeply, it will be important to analyze the complexity of ideas through a temporal approach.
