A performance simulation of vehicle powertrain is developed to predict fuel economy and driveability. The program, called POTAS-VPS, can model for both general vehicles with M/T, A/T, CVT and special vehicles such as electric or hybrid. This paper summarizes the governing equations used in the model. The another commercial simulation package, CYSIM by Ricardo, used to validate the program is described, and simulation results are compared with each other. Then several simulation studies with emphasis on the comparison of performance between the two different vehicles with A/T and CVT, are conducted to illustrate the utility of POTAS-VPS as a comparative tool. It is concluded that the program provides good qualitative predictions of vehicle performance and is especially useful for comparing different transmissions or com-ponents in vehicle drivelines.
