Sim Hun, the author of Sangnoksu, was not a Christian but had a great interest in the national movement of YMCA. This interest enabled him to create the heroine of the novel Chai Young-sin on the model of a real woman with the name of Choi Yong-sin, whom YMCA dispatch to Samgol, Kyungkido. This transfiguration is essential in discussing literary achievement of the novel, for the existence and nature of that model contributes to activate a textual structure of the novel, that is, an interaction of 'scapegoat consciousness' of Christianity and nationalistic anti-Japanese consciousness.
Unlike other contemporary novels such as Lee Kwang-soo's Huk (Soil) and Lee Ki-young's Kohyang (Home Country), which have just one hero in each, this novel presents a heroine Chai Young-sin who can stand with the heo Park Dong-hyouk. In spire of being written on an ideological basis of uncompromising nationalism, Sangrohu receives the ideas of Rural Enlightenment Campaign led by Christian Churches. Such is also a great significance of the novel in the modern Korean literary history.
