Rebirth means restoration of the dead to life, especially the reanimation of the corpse after death, and myth containing rebirth motif prevails worldwide including China and Korea. The type of rebirth appearing in myth can be roughly divided into the following three categories: (1) a man rises again and prolongs his life; (2) the soul is united with an other body, animal, or plant after death and lives again; (3) the deceased becomes a god, spirit, or an immortal instead of a living creature.
The motif of resurrection after death in Korean myth is somewhat more complicated than it is in Chinese myth in terms of the more specific description of the motifs of resurrection which are associated with shaman elements. In this regard rebirth myth in Korea is relatively influenced by shamanism, whereas rebirth myth in China is more influenced by totemism.
The motifs of the dead being reborn into a new life through metamorphosis in Chinese myth are varied and numerous, while those in Chinese myth are simple and few. The origin of the former is somewhat related to ancient totemism, while the appearance of the latter seems to have nothing to do with that ancient religion.
Both countries have the motif of becoming a god, or ascending to heaven after death, which seems to be an influence of shamanism. However, in Korea the existence of mountain gods reflects the motif of mountain worship. This is not the case in China.
Lastly, it should be noted that such a rebirth motif common to myth worldwide is similar to the theory of the transmigration of souls, a main idea which is a highly developed religion.
