For what purpose was Jaures fighting for justice during the Dreyfus Affair, while it did not constitute a class war at all? If we presume that is because he was a republican, it would be a too simple interpretation which neglected the fact of reality. He defended the cause of Dreyfusard from the standpoint of his socialism. To make evidence of it, this paper examines Les Preuves as well as his articles published mainly in La Petite Re´publique from January, 1898 through 1899. These were the criticism of the irregularity of military tribunal and the condemnation of the nationalists as an inevitable alliance of capitalism. This paper draws a conclusion that such an ardent defence of Republic was closely linked to the elevation of the consciousness of the proletariat. Jaures convinced that the proletariat, “the true intellectual class”, would be in charge of future society substituting for the corrupt bourgeois. And for that, it is necessary for the proletariat, even oppressed and victimized under the capitalist exploitation, to recognize the value of an individual as a human being. Without such democratic foundation, the social republic of proletariat could not be attained. This paper finally argues that French socialism at that point perhaps gained one of its historical and ideological originality stemmed from the French Revolution.
