This paper is an attempt to examine the intertextuality between plays of China and Dongsanggi, a play written in Chinese by a Korean author, and to clarify what elements of the diverse traditional plays it accommodated and modified for what reasons.
The findings of the research can be summed up as follows :
1. In terms of its style, it appears that the writer of Dongsanggi created the play on the basis of elements from the northern and southern regions of the Yuan Dynasty China as well as those from the Ming Dynasty China.
2. Each character of the play is assigned a unique name such as Gim (金), Li (吏), Dae (大), So (小), Yi (二), Sam (三), thereby assuming a unique individuality. The singing role is also portioned out to many of the characters, which is a divergence from the tradition of the northern Yuan plays in which only the leading character does all the singing.
3. Unlike in plays of China, more weight is given to the narrative in Dongsanggi than to the singing, with the priority placed upon the narration of facts and reproduction of the events.
4. In its style of songs, Dongsanggi does not comply with the one-act-one-song tradition of the northern Yuan plays, but rather attempts to match the changing situations and moods with appropriate songs and melodies.
5. Both the title and the content of the play suggests that it’s a parody of Seosanggi. The author thus seems to have maintained a critical view of Seosanggi and intended to create an antipode to the old play.
