The purpose of this study is to investigate the senses of the entry words in the dictionary by NAKL and discuss the problems that considered to be revised.
In the compilation of a dictionary, the main task is to explain the senses of the headwords. It is represented by the lexicographer's experience and his intuition obtained from linguistic data.
It is difficult to explain sense of an entry word, because a sense should be clarified concisely and easily.
Following subjects show what details this study is discussing :
1. Representation of sense (in relation to the conciseness and accuracy)
2. Form of sense (according to POS[Part of Speech])
3. Sense of root and derivative
4. Sense of compound and idiom
5. Sense of idiom and proverb
6. Sense system of polysemy and double POS
7. Supplementation of sense
Dictionary should be 'user-friendly', which is the primary factor in the compilation process. From that point of view, NAKL dictionary has several problems. Firstly, it doesn't cover the whole of sense, despite the large volume. Secondly, it gives inconvenience to users when looking up the derivational words, because of the ill-arranged entry orders. Finally, it is compiled by using huge corpus but doesn't cover newly added senses.
To develop good sense of a headword in a lexicon, lexicographers should try not to just copy the contents of previously compiled dictionaries, but modify the senses of the former dictionaries and make every effort to bring out new meanings of the words.
