Newly admitted international students should make cultural, social, intellectual, and personal adjustments to a new academic life. The goal of this study is to investigate how newly admitted Korean students cope with academic needs in general and writing needs in particular in ESL contexts. The case study methodology was employed to tap into Korean students' perceptions of academic experience during the first semester of graduate study. One male and one female Korean student attending a large public university in US participated in this study. Due to their intermediate English proficiency, they were required to take ESL courses while taking content courses. Qualitative data obtained during interviews are reported as the narrative form of a profile. The results of this study give us an in-depth and detailed picture of how these two Korean students managed to meet academic demands of courses and writing at the initial stage of graduate program. Acknowledgement of students' academic and writing needs and how they managed to cope with these needs will provide a valid rationale for the implementation or improvement of existing ESL courses.
