All historians interpret history not only for its own sake but in pursuit of their own time's interest and hopes for the future. This is especially true for the German and American historians involved in the First World War. Their propaganda writings have become an issue of permanent. relevance since they dramatically reveal to what extent the scientific ideals of historians can be outweighed by the values of their time.
For the German and American war-time historians the concept of "nation" became the most important factor to determine not only their theories, but also their actions. They felt they were forced to submit to the highest value by three combined powers: At the top, there was 'state's censorship, from below, the pressure of the masses, and from the inside, there was their own emotional attachment to their nation, Thus, the war publications of German and American historians mirror the different ways in which their authors dealt with the conflict between their demand for objectivity and values; they were tom between the scientist and the citizen.
The scientific battle between German and American Historians at the homefront resulted in a confrontation that revealed the incompatibility of Mid- and Western Europe's highest values, their ideas of "culture" and "democracy".
War-time actions of historians had an immense effect on different ways of development of history in Germany and the United States. In Germany history had already been established as a 'science(wissenschaft)' in the early 19th century. In contrast, in the United States, historians were still struggling for recognition and emancipation from amateur historians. As a result, the impact of the historians' participation in war-time publishing in America was much greater than in Germany.
