Yang, Jong-keun. 2008, Reading Crises and Possibilities of Literature and Art in the Childhood of Capitalism : Walter Benjamin and Marxism. Wonkwang Journal of Humanities 9(1), 101-121. Walter Benjamin is considered as a post-modern culture theorist in general, yet the fact that his theory is closely connected with Marxism is often neglected. This essay scrutinizes Benjamin's theory on culture and film especially illuminating its relationship with Marxism.
His main concern is to criticize mass influences of Phantasmagoria of capitalist market and encourage the mass to confirm their class consciousness. To achieve this purpose, it is definitely important for him to show the 'facts' as they are, not opinions or ideologies. This is one of the reasons why he uses montage as his writing technique. In addition, his preference of montage and image-thought to conceptual thought explains his belief in the power of new forms of art such as photography and film.
Now that we are living in the era of mass mechanical reproduction, we should make use of diverse kinds of reproductive effects in the field of art and literature. This could mean that art and literature should change themselves according to the changes of technologies and markets. (Kyungpook National University)
