The purpose of this paper is to investigate the actual conditions of interaction occurring in E-learning English conversation classes and to develop interactive teaching-learning strategies for those classes. To achieve the goals, two online questionnaires have been conducted on 232 online EFL students, and the questions are systematically created and analyzed according to five interaction types, including human-to-nonhuman interaction between learners and online contents, and between learners and Learning Management System (LMS).
The data reveal that high-level interaction activities mainly occur between learners and teachers, between learners and on-line contents, and between learners and LMS. In particular, the interaction between learners and online contents exhibits the highest interaction level in terms of the number of items, average points and percentage. Thus, the study suggests that as interactive strategies online contents provide various multimedia materials, language practice softwares, online dictionaries, self-exercises, native speakers’ voices, and review quizzes. The survey also shows that in contrast to the learners in face-to-face English conversation classes, E-learners do not frequently interact with their peer learners. Another finding is that learners’ interaction with LMS is also considered highly important since LMS can monitor all the online class activities and communication boards. To activate learners’ interaction with LMS, LMS should be designed to reflect the learners’ needs, with easy guidelines for every learning management menu, time chatting and discussion boards, and memo and email functions on the online contents screen.
