This study aims at presenting academic issues of the connection between immigration and religion by examining religious communities of foreign migrant workers in Korea. Despite a short history of labor immigration and other structural limitations, namely unstable living conditions, religion serves as a very important element for foreign workers. With the exception of the Chinese and the Japanese, foreign migrant workers lack social, political, cultural and historical ties with Korean society. Therefore, they depend more heavily on religion at least in the early stage of immigration. Especially, formation of a religious community is the most representative aspect of religious lives of immigrants. Observing examples analyzed in this study indicates that religious communities of immigrants show diverse characteristics similar to those of ethnic community, local religious community, civic organization, resident community, and immigrant support organization. Depending on these religious groups’ relationships with outside communities, they can be classified into a universalistic community, which is open to other religions and ethnicities, and a particularistic one with an exclusivist attitude towards others. As with most immigrant groups, immigrants in Korea tend to gather together according to countries of their origin. Specific regions within nations sometimes also serve as important dividing factors. There have been religious communities, which began as multiethnic ones and eventually became divided into ethnic churches according to people’s origins.
