To investigate high school students` understanding of dancing and the necessity of dancing education for boy students, a questionnaire was made up according to sex distinction from October 8, 1997 to October 10, about 385 students (198 girls and 187 boys) who were in the second grade of coeducational schools in Seoul. Through frequency analysis and crossbars, the following results were obtained: 1) High School Students` Understanding about And Importance of Dance Education ① Most boy students had a wrong understanding that they considered artistic dance like ballet or modern dance as a dance. On the contrary, girl students had a correct recognition that they considered artistic or recreational dance as a dance. ② Most boy students obtained the information about dancing from TV and newspaper, while most girl students obtained it from TV, newspaper and the teachers of dance academies. And there were also a lot of students who couldn`t got information about dancing. ③ Students answered positively about dancing in the following categories: the maintenance and improvement of physical strength, development of physique and creativity, improvement of power of expression and understanding of different culture. And they answered negatively in the following categories: emotional purification and development of sociality. But the result of verification was that students thought that dancing was not helpful to the following seven categories except development of creativity - the maintenance and improvement of physical strength, development of physique, improvement of power of expression, emotional purification, development of sociality, improvement of artistic sense and understanding of different culture. ④ Boy and girl students, and parents were also not interested in dance education. 2) Why Is Dance Education for Boy Students Important? The greater part of boy students didn`t think that dance education was useless. However, on the contrary, girl students thought that it was necessary for boy students to learn dancing. As a reason for dance education, boy students thought it important because of development of physique and emotional purification, while girl students thought that it enhanced the level of their culture. Thus, in a general sense, they thought that it was helpful in many sides such as cultivating culture, development of their majors, development of physique, emotional purification, application in real life, etc. Boy students thought that dance education was useless because dancing was not practical and unbecoming to man, and that it wasn`t interesting, while girl students thought that it was not practical. 3) The Type of Dance Education, The Kind of Dance And The Number of Class A Week Students wanted to attend class with the opposite sex, and to learn jazz dance and sports dance. And they were especially interested in Korean traditional dance and foreign folk dance. Unlike boy students, girl students were also interested in modern dance. And students wanted to attend courses one or two hours a week.
