This study deals with the recent Korean scholarship during the past two years in the field of western history. Before analyzing many scholars’ hardworking research in every field, I’d like to sketch noticeable trends in the studies of western history during last 20 years from 1995 to 2015. I hope this would provide a fine overview of the atmosphere of the western history studies in Korea.
Korean studies of western history has undergone tremendous change since 1995 under the influence of postmodernism, which has brought about “Cultural Turn.” From 1995 to 2005, Cultural history has deep rooted in Korean studies of western history, overshadowing the traditional political history and social history. It is notable that the writings of political and diplomatic histories has been clearly declining. Instead, the scope and theme of studies of western history has been expanding to culture, arts, sports, gender, women, the various aspects of everyday life, and so on. Then, after the year of 2005, in the midst of globalizaion, Cultural history has played a variation with the wide range of case studies such as orientalism, Eurocentrism, postcolonialism, transnationalism, migration, environment, urban history, and memory studies. During the past 3 to 4 years, the global history, comparative studies and Big History has come to the fore, providing the possibility of synthesizing and integrating the fragmented and subdivided areas of western history in Korea.
