This study was initiated by two research questions: 1) what are Korean-learning as an L2 students aware of about their L2 learning environments, and 2) how do they experience the L2 learning classrooms as their learning environments change. Therefore, this study was intended to investigate the case of German learners who started learning L2 abroad and continued learning L2 during the period of their student exchange program in Korea. Along with data analysis based on in-depth interviews, this study investigated inter-personal, physical, and psychological factors at play when participants experience the change from ‘an KFL environment where Korean was a foreign language’ to ‘an KSL environment where Korean was native language’. In addition, those factors can reveal student reactions when they draw contrasts between their former and current learning environments, and evaluate the two environments. Participants attempted to adjust to the new environment in a way that maintained their own learning style, while also recognizing the difference between the environments. Furthermore, their new learning environment had effects on their motivation to learn, in terms of expansion, change, reduction, or elimination.
