The purpose of this paper is to examine the plays of Eugene O'Neill and novel of Lee, Cheong-Joon through the use of psychoanalysis. O'Neill traced the tragic path of his family cycle and attempted to express Oedipus trauma through his work, Desire under the Elms. Throughout his life, O'Neill has been interested in psychological trauma and so he explores the sexual desire and its motive in his plays. Therefore, this paper focuses on the trauma among characters, especially, Oedipus trauma, and character's possessiveness over the material. Eben is obsessed with his mother, but overcomes through his love with Abbie whose possession entails her occupation of Eben and his mother's room. O'Neill tries to complete forgiveness and reconciliation among characters through an exploration of the fundamental desires and inner conflicts of humans. According to Lee, Cheong Joon, our wounds stem from the experience or the emotional disorder in our childhood. He describes his main character who lives with the psychological trauma from the experience 'A Fear of Flashlight' from his childhood in "Discharching from Hospital." The characters in Lee, Cheong Joon's novels are obsessed by constant guilty conscience, which appears when the subjects try to hide their desire. The characters in Lee, Cheong Joon's novel have maternal qualities and sense of guilty. Also, their abnormal and extraordinary characteristics come out of unconscious attributes. O'Neill and Lee, Cheong Joon allow their main characters to overcome the oppression of society by using the device of self-awakening and self-exploration.
