This paper explores a relation between the deaths of, and murders by, women in two dramatic works, Eugene O"Neill’s Desire Under the Elms and Susan Glaspell’s Trifles. The deaths of Cabot"s two former wives in Desire Under the Elms and of John Wright in Trifles have a common root cause, namely excessive desire for material goods. These two husbands, who are portrayed as hard and stingy men, lacking humanity, are the similar element that connects the two plays to the theme of death and murder. And the effect of ‘absent presence’ of the dead or murdered upon the characters on stage is the power that drives these works. The tragedy precipitated by the combination of a male-centered social order and materialistic goals is manifested in the form of death and murder, while readers and audiences simultaneously come to understand the ‘absent wife’ who has been mentally murdered. Through examining these works we gain insight into the social effects of the ‘presence of absence’.
