This paper viewed and interpreted the English phonics from the Korean context. Phonics as a method teaching letter-sound regularities has been built, paradoxically, on the foundation of great letter-sound irregularity in English. Phonics is difficult even for native English learners. It is suggested, therefore, that teachers take phonics not as method teaching how to sound words out correctly, but as a method to provide young learners with clues for recognizing the words they know in sound. In addition, the Korean language has a very different phonetic and phonological system from that of English. It does not allow consonant clusters at the beginning of a word. Most importantly, Korean children do not acquire phonemes as independent ones, but acquire them indirectly through the contrast of syllables. For these reasons, the synthetic phonics instruction and Elkonin Boxes are not recommendable in Korea. And using unfamiliar and nonsense words should be the last resort in phonics instruction in Korea.
