Daniels"s The Madness of Esme and Shaz is a drama in a trilogy with Head-Rot Holiday and Beside Herself from Daniels Plays: Two. As the drama is written with a theme of Women and Madness, the three plays deal with women"s madness. However, the subject of each play is different from one another. In Beside Herself and Head-Rot Holiday, the protagonists suffer a trauma from the incest by their own fathers. Daniels wrote The Madness of Esme and Shaz with a focus differently from the other two plays; especially the drama is about love, hope. happiness and acceptance.
This paper explores how Ezme and Shaz develop their relationship as aunt and niece, and also friendship and bond as women. Even though the two protagonists have completely different characters and personalities, and never heard of each other, they come to understand each other further after some conflicts. For their freedom, they escape to their own utopia, where an ancient Greek poetess and a lesbian, Sapho, was born. There, they become free and independent from the oppression.
