A lot of material was produced during the 5.18 uprising in 1980. It recorded the incidents that occurred in Gwangju city regardless of whether it was a soldier or a civilian. However, depending on who the recorder was, the contents of the record varied. The data of the 5・18 Uprising shows that the record may never reflect the facts honestly and accurately. In addition, many of the records of the time were lost or intentionally distorted.
The distortion of the 5.18 uprising which had begun from that time is still continuing. In May 1980, citizens of Gwangju confronted violence and brutality of public power. At first, They had thrown rocks and flaming bottles against the public power armed with bayonets. At that time, the government and the army put the resistance of the citizens, who were just like the naked body, at the crossroads of life and death into a ‘mob’ that caused illegal activities and defined the resistance of citizens as a ‘riot’. These regulations were projected without filtering on the military records recorded in May 1980. Before the outbreak of the 5·18 uprising, the new-military authorities(신군부) regarded the actions of the citizens as “illegal”. The army that recorded the 5·18 uprising had left a record in this prejudice, which continues to this day. In other words, distorting the recent 5.18 uprising starts from the distortion and logic of the new military new-military authorities.
