Zheng Banqiao who was famous for the unparalleled talent of poetry, calligraphy and painting in Qing dynasty divided the process of drawing bamboo into 4 sections to explain. The 4 sections are ‘the bamboo in nature ,the bamboo in the eyes, the bamboo in the mind and the bamboo on the hands’. This unique and creative opinion showing his deep understanding and cognition about the aesthetic transformation occurs from the ‘visual cognition’, ‘perceptual cognition’ to ‘expression’. It expands in the process of artistic creation. ‘Bamboo in the eyes’ is not only the visual image from the direct and superficial observation of the ‘nature’, but also the careful ‘observation with heart’ towards the ‘nature’ and ‘myself’, which is based on the general observation of his personality, knowledge, virtue and life experience. ‘Bamboo in the eyes’ can be an observation between “bamboo itself” and “substance”. ‘Bamboo in the mind’ is an aesthetic image that unifies the meaning and thought with the visual feeling. Actually, to the artist, whether the bamboo itself really exists causes no difference. ‘Bamboo in the hands’ is to draw the ‘bamboo image in mind’ with the artistries, which indicates the meaning before painting and expresses the sentiment out of the artistries. For Zheng Banqiao, this drawing process is not only the unification of ‘external observation’ and ‘inner observation’ but also the unification of ‘subject’ and ‘object’. In this process, the natural feature in his eyes has been changed into an artistic image. The more important thing is that Zheng Banqiao himself can enjoy real freedom and liberation and also realize the fulfillment through this process.
