Commonly used terms when explaining the cultural diversity phenomenon include multiculture, interculture, cross-culture, transculture. And, the key concept that is intimately related to these is hybrid culture. This is because contemporary cultural diversity issues are connected in many ways to how the hybrid culture situation develops. Certainly, it is closely linked to two fundamental concepts of culture: cultural identity and cultural variability. In this regard, today’s cultural diversity is understood as an advance of ‘multiculture → interculture → transculture’ related to hybrid cultures, and cross-culture is sometimes considered essential to realizing cultural diversity on a practical level. Each of these words is independent and can be related to cultural content studies as well as the cultural diversity phenomenon in its own way.
Based on this observation, this paper attempts to examine the definitions of these five terms. Through the examination, it is hoped that it gives the reader an opportunity to think deeply about how we can understand the cultural diversity phenomenon and also how it may be developed. South Korea has entered a multicultural society, where cultural diversity has become common in society. It seems that it is important to understand these cultural diversity concepts and to think deeply about the current situation. A proper understanding of these five terms is one of the studies that will lead to better understanding and a good start for today’s society, which was opened by cultural diversity.
